Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) just has issued the following statement:

We expect many cancer patients have to receive effective therapy including surgical operation, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy in Ukraine. However, it is currently impossible in Ukraine because the Russian is attacking Ukraine and destroying many medical facilities as well as other buildings and houses. We also know many injured Ukrainians by the Russian attack are not able to receive proper medical care in Ukraine. Moreover, food and drug storage are running out in Ukraine. Thus, medical care is interrupted in Ukraine due to the war. As a global society of medical oncology, the JSMO and its members in the world are in solidarity with Ukrainian patients and citizens during the Russian invasion of their country. We sincerely request the immediate protection and evacuation of the Ukrainian cancer patients and other injured patients to a safe place to receive their appropriate medical treatment.
The progression of medical sciences including medical oncology is based on the global clinical studies and research collaborations of scientists from many countries. We have communicated with many scientists and clinicians including Ukrainian and Russian people to develop new cancer therapies. However, because of the war conducted by Russian leaders, the activities of scientists and clinicians in Ukraine and Russia were completely interrupted. Particularly, the Ukrainian scientists and clinicians ran into life-threatening situations due to the war and cannot participate in clinical studies, research collaboration, medical practices, and exchanges of scientific opinions.
The JSMO condemns Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine, and call for the immediate withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine.

*The summary in this statement was approved at the general meeting of JSMO fiscal year of 2022 held on March 5, 2022.
